Brain Week 2015

Bringing Bubbly Brains Together

We were delighted to team up with 15 schools in this year’s Brain Week. Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and New Zealand were all represented, raising funds through bake sales, selling RCD merchandise, holding brainy tournaments, and a Grey Day.

Representatives from each school commended the efforts of their peers, and their determination to show some heart for the brain.

“By the Wednesday, we had sold of merchandise and were ringing Liz for more… it was so impressive to see all 1400 students from our senior campuses get involved… we’re going to push for all 3000 students of Haileybury to makes brains matter next year.” – Captain of Haileybury, Harrison Jones

Grey Day in May

On a day far from gloomy, there were 10 schools from around Victoria that simultaneously went Grey in May. Due to the abundance of grey trackpants, hoodies and onesies, students have quickly dubbed Grey Day ‘the most comfortable school day in Australia!’

NAB also took on the ‘challenge’, albeit a comfy one, with over 10 locations throughout Bayside and the CBD donning the grey.

The Rubik’s Rumble

Connor loved a puzzle. From a young age he would flex his mind muscles, and it later became an important part brain rehabilitation following tumour treatments. This inspired us to begin the first annual ‘Brain Week Rubik’s Cube Championship’, bringing together each schools fastest cuber, at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

To out delight we had a very special guest: Rubik’s cube World Champion, Feliks Zemdegs. Feliks charismatically hosted and adjudicated the event, and followed with an impressive demonstration of his incredible ‘speedcubing’ skills.

The inaugural winner of the Rubik Rumble was Moss Ebling (Y11) of Melbourne High School with a blazing speed of 20.97 seconds!

 Beanies for Brain Cancer

Sometimes it’s difficult to determine what is coincidence and what is fate. On Sunday May 3 – the eve of Brain Week – we were pinching ourselves as Carrie Bickmore took to the stage and delivered the most poignant, significant, rousing speech in the history of the Logies! With the buzz about #beaniesforbraincancer, we were off to a stirring start to brain week, and our beanies were out in force.

“I thought, you know what, if I get the chance to have two minutes at the end to say something, rather than bang on about my job and how much I love it I thought, I’ll just use the two minutes to talk about something that was important and close to my heart.” – Carrie Bickmore

We are proud to announce that over $15 000 was raised throughout the schools who wanted to make #brainsmatter.

A special thank you to Feliks Ebling, Lisa McCune, Oliva Wells, the Minders from the 2014 Brain Week, our Master Minder Ellen Dooley, and everyone else who took time to start the conversation about brain cancer.
