$100 million for Brain Matters!
On Sunday October 29 the Federal Government announced the establishment of the Australian Brain Cancer Mission to double the survival rate of patients within 10 years.
Fuelled by a $100 million fund, the Government will commit $50 million over the next 10 years under the Medical Research Future Fund which will be combined with significant initial contributions from philanthropic partners.
The Mission has been underpinned by the research roadmap created by the Industry Roundtable event in August of this year. Where our Executive Director Liz Dawes, along with other advocates and world-leading international and domestic experts, put forward an ambitious agenda to the Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt.
Mr. Hunt said the Australian Brain Cancer Mission aimed to double the survival rate of patients within 10 years. Despite almost no improvement in three decades, he cited rapid improvement in the treatment of leukemia as evidence that fast progress was possible.
“Now is the moment when we have the opportunity with the new targeted therapies and immunotherapies, with the new proton beam therapy and other treatments, where we can have a real breakthrough in brain cancer,”
– Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt.
Brain cancer is the number one cancer killer of young people in Australia and now, with more investment and awareness we have a chance to make a real difference to patients living with this awful disease.
The Mission is committed to investing in more clinical trials and we’ll be working alongside the government and brain cancer researchers every step of the way, ensuring treatment options are accelerated.
We’ve always said that many brains are better than one. And your support of our projects has helped spur industry collaboration, so thank you.
Thank you for your support and for making brains matter, you’ve made something truly awesome happen.
Aeternum fortis!
